Best things to do in Airlie Beach
Though you could while away the days relaxing on its shores, Airlie Beach opens the way to a huge range of unique experiences in nature. Here's our top picks of the best things to do and see in Airlie Beach.
Best things to do in Airlie Beach:
Best local attractions:
The Whitsunday Islands & the Great
Barrier Reef
Positioned close to the Great Barrier Reef and
Whitsunday Island, the Coral Sea is guaranteed to be
the first place you go on arrival.
Airlie Beach is the exit and entry point for the Whitsundays' 74 dreamy islands. With almost all uninhabited these picturesque islands, scattered amongst the Great Barrier Reef, offer extraordinary getaways with each delivering its own unique experience.
Whitehaven Beach
Head to Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island to experience one of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world. Sparkling white, Whitehaven's 4 glorious miles of soft sand is composed of 98% pure white silica giving it a gleaming finish which looks spectacular against the glass-blue Coral Sea.
The best thing to do? Enjoy a gourmet lunch on the sand then hike to the top of Hill Inlet to drink in the cracking views across this majestic island setting.
Though Whitehaven is jaw-droppingly beautiful, there are 74 other isles to see. How to get around? Here and on Airlie, kayaks, jet skis, catamarans, helicopters and sea planes are the transport of choice.
You can charter your own catamaran and sail around the islands at your leisure. For an evening experience, spend a night sleeping over the Great Barrier Reef on your own luxurious yacht. For sole travel, whizz around the isles on a jet-ski or at a more leisurely pace in a kayak or on a paddle board.
Top Whitsunday Islands to visit
Top Whitsunday Islands to visit include a flight over Heart Reef for iconic pictures of the Whitsunday's naturally-formed heart-shaped reef (if you want to propose – this could be the ideal setting). For more romance in spades, Vlascoff Cay is a deserted isle where you can spend 90 minutes picnicking, swimming and wandering your very own desert island.
Hayman Island
If you're travelling for love or in the mood for up-scale pampering, Hayman Island is a favourite for weddings with amazing resort facilities, including world-class dining and out of this world spas.
Lady Elliott Island
For wildlife, Lady Elliott Island is the top pick. Teeming with marine wildlife, you'll be amazed to see manta rays with wingspans as wide as 7m and jump at the chance to swim with minke whales. Of course, the see-through waters of the Great Barrier Reef make spotting so much of its awesome marine wildlife truly special .
Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is another favourite for animals, this time on land. On Hamilton Island you'll find local koalas, dingoes, birds and kangaroos being cared for in its sanctuary. You can get up close to the animals and even breakfast with koalas if you visit in the morning.
Mon Repos
Schedule your visit right at Mon Repos and you could witness loggerhead turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs or baby loggerheads running into the sea after they've hatched.
And that's just 5 of the 74!
These waters are of course, teeming with tropical fish and marine wildlife in every colour, shape and size. That means both on the Whitsunday Islands and Airlie Beach, snorkelling and swimming are must-do activities with monumental dive sites, (mostly congregated around Hook Island and Hayman Island) such as The Pinnacles and The Woodpile, unmissable destinations.
Airlie Beach
For lazy days, Airlie's four glorious beaches lined with palms are the perfect place to relax. Sitting at the bottom of rolling hills covered in lush green vegetation, its a picturesque scene. Cannonvale Beach at one end, is the biggest with its own swimming enclosure. At the other, Boathaven Beach delivers serene coastline that's often almost empty.
Airlie Beach lies in the middle with the town's iconic lagoon behind.
The crystal-clear waters of the Coral Sea mean watersports are one of the most popular things to do. You'll relish everything from sailing lessons to snorkelling, skydiving, jet skiing, ocean rafting at 65km/h, kayaking and paddle boarding.
Airlie's man-made lagoon
Airlie's man-made lagoon has multiple pools of different depths and type. You'll appreciate 4.5 million litres of fresh water accompanied by picnic areas and landscaped gardens. Popular with locals and travellers, the lagoon's a lively place to hang out with beer gardens edging its borders.
For rousing walks, Bicentennial Walkway stretches all the way along the coast, from Cannonvale Beach to Airlie Beach with lots of picturesque scenes and marine life to spot through the glass-like sea water along the way.
Alternatively, the 27km Conway Circuit, which can be steep in places, takes you through rainforest and streams as you travel from Airlie Beach to Proserpine. Or hike up to Honeyeater Lookout for the best vistas across the Coral Sea and Whitsundays.
The Tropic
Another divine, right on the ocean eaterie is The Tropic which almost feels as if you're in the water.
Whitsundays Country Golf Club
If you like golf, you'll revel in the collection of superb golf courses in the area. The 18-hole championship Whitsundays Country Golf Club has legendary views out to sea. Meanwhile, Proserpine Golf Course in the hinterland is renowned for the opportunity to play close to local wildlife.
Clarke Range
As evening falls, sunset cruises are a must whilst each day brings the opportunity to experience new terrain. Head west into the hinterland where you'll find Conway National Park and Proserpine with the giant peaks of Clarke Range behind.
Proserpine is home to the ancestral lands of the Gia people. Here you'll find Dryander National Park in one direction and Conway National Park in the other.
Conway National Park's
Trek across Conway National Park's many trails which take you through majestic waterfalls, staggering rainforest, beaches, streams and bays. You'll find picnic areas in places and lots of great views out to sea and across the Whitsunday Islands. Hike to the top of Cedar Creek Falls for amazing views if you dare.
For other days, there's an endless feast of treats to experience along the coastal road.
From the sugar cane factory in Mackay bordered by its own sugar cane fields to the sight of kangaroos hopping along the beach for their morning stroll at Cape Hillsborough to gigantic Wallaman Falls, Broken River's platypuses or the crocodiles, minke whales, wallabies en route to the Daintree Rainforest at the other end the road, there's so much to see and do.
Best restaurants
With easy access to an amazing array of fresh local produce and seafood, Airlie Beach is a foodie dream.
Top Airlie Beach restaurants include Fish D'vine for just-caught seafood and mouthwatering cocktails served up in glorious surroundings or Hamilton Yacht Club's Bommie for spectacular fine dining beside the water. For adventurous Aussie dishes in lively surroundings, book a seat at KC's Bar and Grill where crocodile, kangaroo and emu are all on the menu. For Asian fusion head to Cool La La then finish the week with a magnificent Italian feast at Sorrento Restaurant and Bar.
