Best things to do in Rhodes
Best beaches
Rhodes's beautiful clear waters and well-kept beaches are perfect for all types of travellers. Long banks of sand and great facilities are easily found whilst quiet coves almost hidden from sight, are plentiful. Here's our favourites from Rhodes' best beaches.
Top beaches for families include Tsambika Beach, Ixia Beach and Lindos Beach. Lindos is a gorgeous stretch of coastline with shallow waters, topped by Lindos Castle. There's lots to do and see in the area plus plenty of restaurants so it's a great place to spend the day.
Tsambika Beach
Tsambika Beach is a stunning setting with green hills behind, a pretty bay ahead and a striking monastery at the top of its shores. Down below, you'll find watersports on the beach and lots of bars and restaurants on its borders making it an ideal choice for groups and families. If you don't mind a pebbly beach, Ixia Beach offers a similar experience with cracking scenery and lots to do.
St Paul's Bay
If you're willing to make the lengthy descent, St Paul's Bay is a picturesque spot with stunning views. It does get busy so arrive early to bag the best space.
Anthony Quinn Beach
Another one for the adults is Anthony Quinn Beach. This beautiful inlet has piercing blue waters, edged by a rocky, hilly enclave pretty with pine trees and foliage. However it's handy to kno in advance that Anthony Quinn's pebble-sand beach is often frequented by nudists so you're not too shocked when relaxing on the beach.
Prasonisi Beach
For something a little different, head to Prasonisi Beach but make sure you arrive at the right time! Prasonisi Beach is only visible at low tide. For the rest of the time, it looks like an island because the sand is partially covered by water. The beach is surrounded by mountains with lots of restaurants on its borders, shallow waters and dazzling views out to sea.
Kalithea Beach
Alternatively, Kalithea Beach has hot springs and masterful architecture hidden amongst the pines and palms that surround its shores. Kalithea Springs were once a place where people bathed to find healing from ailments during ancient times and its pretty Moorish pavilion and pergolas are often used for events today.
Popular with travellers of all ages, Kalithea is a fascinating piece of coastline with stunning scenery, a beautiful beach, excellent facilities and great spots for diving.
Best local attractions
When exploring all that Rhodes has to offer, a visit to Rhodes Old Town has to be top of the list. Rhodes' medieval Old Town is one of the most well-preserved fortified cities in the world. Inhabited by crusading knights, Venetians, Ottoman Turks, Italians and more, this distinguished town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site you won't want to miss.
Resplendent architecture, cobbled streets, a magnificent city wall and tons of tiny alleyways are ripe for discovery. From gothic archways to elegant Italian-style courtyards, ancient churches and medieval buildings that were once places of rest for the Knights of St John, there is plenty to do and see inside and on its borders.
Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
Not to be missed is the 14th century Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Built by the Knights of St John, the town's crowning structure was constructed in the place where the ancient temple of Helios, God of the Sun, once stood.
The palace's huge structure was a great feat for its time with 158 rooms and spherical towers. Inside, there are rooms to tour furnished with expensive artefacts from the 16th and 17th century plus frescoes, statues, mosaics and more.
Lindos Acropolis
Perched high on a cliff overlooking the sea, the Lindos Acropolis is a fortified city that's been repurposed by every group of new inhabitants to the island. The result is a fascinating place where you can enjoy stunning views out to sea alongside a collection of magnificent ruins spanning many centuries and civilisations.
Notable sights include the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, the Byzantine Church of St John, an ancient amphitheatre and the 14th century castle of the Knights of St John.

Located in Europe's only natural Oriental Sweetgum forest, you''ll see all sorts of rare and colourful butterflies nesting around tree trunks if they're asleep or overhead in a cloud if awake.
Symi Island
On water, take a trip out to tranquil Symi Island where you'll find serene beaches, the 18th century Monastery of Archangel Michael Panormitis and the pretty, pastel-coloured, neo-classical architecture of Symi Old Town.
