Larnaca has long been a city of historical importance to Cyprus so there are lots of historical attractions to see, as well as top bars and restaurants, popular beaches and fun for the family. Here are our top picks for the best things to do in Larnaca.
Best things to do in Larnaca:
Top watersports: With many beaches in the area, you'll find lots of watersports to enjoy in Larnaca. Jet skiing, banana boats, pedalos, windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing, scuba diving and canoeing are just some of the many sports you can enjoy from any of the beaches.
There are also lots of boat tours, including sea safaris, cruises and fishing trips.
Best beaches: Most holidaymakers who arrive in Larnaca, come for the chance to relax on the beach whilst enjoying the advantages of a well-connected, modern city. Larnaca sits on the coast, so although it is a lively city, there are lots of beaches to visit in the local area.
The most famous beach in Larnaca is Finikoudes Beach. Located at the foot of the city, next to the marina, palm-tree lined Finikoudes Beach sits opposite lots of restaurants and shops. Its convenient location makes Finikoudes' grey sands a busy beach with lots of watersports and facilities available.
A little further away is Mackenzie Beach. Situated close to Larnaca airport, you'll see planes flying over its remarkably calm waters. Mackenzie Beach is a blue flag beach with beach-side restaurants, good facilities and plenty of watersports.
For somewhere smaller, Pervolia Beach (also known as Faros Beach) and Galu Beach are small beaches away from the crowds.
Ideal for families, Pervolia's coastline is kitted out with a special sea barrier to make its waters particularly safe for children. Pervolia Beach's quieter, crystal-clear waters are topped by warm winds from the south, creating the perfect conditions for kite-surfing and other watersports.
CTO Beach (also known as Pyla Beach) is another favourite for families and has its own children's play area as well as facilities for volleyball, handball, watersports and more. For diving and snorkelling, Yiannades Beach (also known as Yannathes Beach) offers the opportunity to explore incredible reefs in a beautiful, natural setting.
Best local attractions:
Beyond its beaches, Larnaca's historical sights are a major attraction. With all the best picks located within the city, it is really easy to explore Larnaca's rich history during your stay.
Larnaca's most famous landmark is the 9th century Agios Lazaros, the Church of Saint Lazarus. This ancient church is said to be the place where Lazarus was buried after living in Larnaca for the final 30 years of his life.
Agios Lazaros is a must-see for its striking architecture both inside and out, which includes a roof held up by a series of double columns, a gilt-covered pulpit, a multi-domed roof, Baroque woodcarvings and more.
Larnaca Salt Lake is a 2.2 km2 nature reserve made up of a collection of four linked lakes. From November to March the lakes are populated by huge flocks of flamingos, wild ducks and other birds who adore the shrimp that flood the waters.
As temperatures rise, the waters dry up to a crisp, salt crust and the birds leave, continuing on to African shores. You can follow a trail through the salt lakes where there will still be many plants and flowers to see.
It is a lovely way to get to the Kamares Aqueduct which is positioned at the top of Larnaca Salt Lake or the Halta Sultan Tekke.
The Kamares Aqueduct is a spectacular structure that once transported water into the city. Built in 1746 and surrounded by green fields, its twenty arches are particularly striking at night when illuminated with lights. The Kamares Aqueduct is a popular place to relax and watch the world go by from one its many benches.
Nearby, the Halta Sultan Tekke is an impressive mosque, believed to have been built as a shrine to Umm Haram, a revered aunt of the Prophet Muhammad. Lying in the midst of a lush grove of cypress trees and palm trees, it is a magnificent sight and a place of religious importance.
You'll need to be appropriately dressed to tour the mosque, alternatively you can walk the grounds outside and enjoy the views across Larnaca Salt Lake.
Medieval Larnaca Castle (also known as Lanarka Fort) sits at the end of the Finikoudes Beach. Built to protect the city from invaders, you can tour the site and visit the small museum.
For shopping, the Turkish Quarter has lots of great finds with many artisan pottery traders selling beautiful handmade goods from their workshops. There are also tons of shops throughout the city, including boutiques, global brands and specialist shops.
Travel out of the city to see the ancient Stavrovouni Monastery built by Emperor Constantine's mother, the Empress Helena. The Stavrouni Monastery sits high on a hill, offering magnificent views across the area, although only men are allowed to see the monastery from the inside.
